Main Street Pizza Company has announced the closure of its Kingsport and Johnson City locations by the end of this year.
In a social media post, the business explained several factors behind the decision. These include the impact of flooding, which has made it difficult for employees and management to travel, increased lease prices due to new ownership of the Johnson City King Center, and ongoing construction in downtown Kingsport.
The post stated that the Johnson City location will remain open through December 15, and the Kingsport location will stay open until December 22, if possible.
Flooding in Washington County, Tennessee, has been a major issue. Several bridges were destroyed, which significantly increased commute times for both employees and management. Many workers have since found jobs closer to home, leaving Main Street Pizza with a reduced staff, the post explained.
Another factor in the closure is the new ownership of the King Center in downtown Johnson City, where Main Street Pizza is located. The post mentioned disagreements over lease renewal terms, with the new owners planning significant changes to the building.
“We wish them the best in their endeavors,” the post stated.
In Kingsport, the company cited the ongoing downtown revitalization project as the primary reason for the closure. While the city and Downtown Kingsport Association have been communicative, the reduced foot and vehicle traffic has made it difficult for the business to stay viable.
“It has also become a burden on our staff, who rely on daily earnings,” the post read. “We hope to inspire future building owners with a better plan and less flood damage to deal with.”
