Pizza Hut China has sparked a wave of shock and amusement online with its latest pizza creation, featuring an entire deep-fried frog as a topping.
The “Goblin” pizza, which was revealed on Chinese social media platform Weibo, shows the frog resting on a bed of coriander and red sauce. The frog is topped with hardboiled egg eyes and olive slices. The unusual dish was introduced as a limited-time offering in collaboration with tech company Tencent, promoting its mobile game Dungeon and Fighter.
Food trends expert David Henkes shared an image of the pizza on Twitter, commenting on the growing popularity of frog as a protein in some cultures. He noted, “Pizza Hut is offering a pizza topped with a frog for a limited time in China – and frog is trending.”
The response to the pizza has been swift and largely critical. Some users on Weibo reacted with humor, suggesting that the pizza might offend Italians. One user jokingly asked the Italian embassy in China to “send troops.”
Others expressed shock at the appearance of the frog, with one calling it a “culinary crime scene.” The strong reactions continued as photos of the pizza surfaced, showing the frog in its full presentation. Many fans referred to the creation as a “pizza felony” or “pizza death row.”
Some commenters focused on the frog’s appearance, specifically its “muscular hindquarters,” while others voiced concerns about the use of olives as a topping. Despite the backlash, the frog-topped pizza remains available for a limited time in China.
