A new Italian pizza restaurant, Fermento Contemporary Pizzeria, has opened on Southend seafront, offering an authentic dining experience with a modern twist.
Located on Eastern Esplanade, near the Namaste Village Indian restaurant, Fermento brings traditional Italian dishes to the area. The restaurant is the brainchild of brothers Luigi and Marco Labate, along with their close friend Gino Chirchiano. The trio is confident that their unique offering will become a favorite among locals and visitors.
Luigi Labate, co-owner and head chef, has extensive experience in the culinary world, including a role as head pizza chef at the Roslin Beach Hotel. He has crafted a menu featuring classic Italian pizzas as well as innovative options. One standout is an autumn-inspired pizza topped with beetroot and root vegetables.
“Pizza is a passion for me,” Luigi said. “In my free time, I study the history and science behind making pizza. While making pizza requires experience, understanding the chemistry is just as important.”
Luigi’s deep knowledge of pizza has helped him create a menu that combines traditional techniques with modern flavors. The restaurant also offers a seasonal menu, allowing for creative toppings and flavors, all while sticking to their time-honored dough recipe.
Fermento has had a steady start since taking over from the Burger Bar Club, and Luigi is optimistic that business will continue to grow as word spreads.
“I believe we offer something exciting for pizza lovers in Southend,” he said.
Despite the presence of other pizza restaurants in the area, Luigi is confident that Fermento will stand out due to the team’s expertise and commitment to authentic Italian cuisine.
“At the end of the day, we are three Italian guys bringing Southend a true taste of Italy,” he added.
In addition to their pizzas, Fermento Contemporary Pizzeria also serves a variety of traditional Italian street food dishes.
