After 27 years of serving homemade Ukrainian dishes and a variety of breakfast, lunch, and deli options, Sherry’s Carpathian Kitchen is closing its doors. Owner Sherry Kassian announced that she has sold the restaurant at 3-45835 Airport Road and will retire.
Kassian, who moved to Chilliwack from Manitoba in 1990, recognized a gap in the community—there were no Ukrainian restaurants in the area. In 1998, she decided to open Sherry’s Carpathian Kitchen to bring a taste of her heritage to the local community.
In a statement on her website, Kassian shared that her restaurant was a tribute to her parents. “I want to thank my father for instilling in me the strength of my heritage,” she wrote. “He taught me what it meant to share with others. But it is my mother’s gift of sharing her recipes and showing how to prepare the food that has allowed me to share something of my culture with you.”
Kassian reflected on the relationships she built over the years and the connections with her loyal customers, many of whom became close friends. She cherished the opportunity to share family recipes passed down from her mother and grandmother.
“I will miss my customers for sure, many who I made friends with,” Kassian said. “I saw their kids grow up and have kids of their own.”
While the new owner plans to transform the restaurant, Kassian noted that the Ukrainian legacy will no longer be part of the establishment. She expressed gratitude to her customers for making her 27-year journey possible.
“I’m looking forward to the new chapter in my life,” she said. “A huge thank you to all my customers who made all of this possible for me throughout the 27 years.”
