The New Yorker Pizzeria’s 34-Year Success in Petaluma

The New Yorker Pizzeria, a staple in downtown Petaluma for over three decades, continues to thrive under the leadership of owner Rosalia Cucci. Her approach to business is simple: focus on what works, and ignore trends and fads.

Cucci, originally from Sicily, moved to the U.S. at the age of 19 and has remained a strong advocate for immigrants seeking a better life. When it comes to running her pizzeria, she relies on instinct rather than following the latest food trends.

During a recent conversation, Cucci shared a few personal details, such as her love for dogs, her dislike for outdoor “parklets,” and her nonchalant attitude toward food debates. While she’s aware of her best-selling pizza—currently the pepperoni and pineapple—Cucci doesn’t engage in discussions over pizza toppings like pineapple. For her, it’s not about the trends but about sticking to what’s best for her restaurant.

“Listen honey, if you’re asking me, what do you put in the sauce? I cannot tell you. I do everything by feeling it,” Cucci explained, emphasizing her hands-on approach to cooking.

Cucci’s straightforward attitude extends to how she runs her business. She doesn’t advertise, avoids technology, and doesn’t rely on distractions like televisions in the restaurant. Instead, The New Yorker is decorated with travel posters, family photos, and postcards from loyal customers worldwide.

The Cucci family’s history in America began when Rosalia and her husband Salvatore moved from Sicily in the late 1970s. After several years in different states, they settled in Petaluma in 1991 and opened The New Yorker. They worked tirelessly to build the restaurant while raising their three children. Rosalia has been running the restaurant alone since 2009 after a stroke forced Salvatore into retirement.

Now 65, Cucci continues to work daily, though not as many hours as she once did. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, The New Yorker remained open by offering a sidewalk ordering system, which is still in place for the weekend pizza slice service.

Cucci’s life has been defined by hard work, a love for family, and an unwavering belief in the strength of immigrants. “The only thing I know,” she said, “is time goes by too quick, too quick.”

The New Yorker Pizzeria remains a beloved part of Petaluma, with loyal customers and a menu that stays true to what Cucci believes works best.
