Wawa’s pizza was recently described as “disgusting” by Barstool Sports founder and food critic Dave Portnoy. This critique came during Portnoy’s ongoing pizza tour in Maryland.
Portnoy, also known as El Presidente, visited the Wawa location in Glen Burnie, Maryland, where he reviewed their cheese pizza. The Pennsylvania-based convenience store chain, which expanded into the pizza business in July 2023, was the subject of Portnoy’s blunt comments.
“I never really got the hype around Wawa. I know it’s popular in Philly,” Portnoy said in a video recorded at the Wawa on Ritchie Highway. Portnoy also shared that the company had considered using him as an advertiser when it launched its pizza service but ultimately did not follow through. “I guess they went with ‘Jersey Shore’ people instead,” he added.
In the video, Portnoy repeatedly mocked the idea that Wawa could offer pizza, saying, “Wawa has pizza!” He was not impressed with the quality of the slice, calling it “disgusting” and rating it 2.8 out of 10. “If we’re just talking about looks, disgusting,” he said. He also mentioned the Wawa’s setting, noting, “It’s like a gas station with a little food spot in the middle.”
Portnoy also took issue with the pricing of the personal cheese pizza, which costs $7.69 after 4 p.m. “It’s not cheap. It’s six, seven bucks for this,” he remarked.
Portnoy’s video, which has gained significant attention with over 800,000 views on Facebook and 200,000 views on YouTube, continued with a humorous tagline: “Wawa has disgusting pizza.” He suggested this could be a more accurate advertising slogan for the brand.
Wawa has not yet responded to requests for comment on Portnoy’s review.
This review is part of Portnoy’s broader exploration of Maryland pizzerias. Recently, he donated $60,000 to TinyBrickOven, a pizzeria in Baltimore, and has also visited several other local pizza spots, including Frank’s Pizza & Pasta and Pizza John’s in Baltimore, as well as Rocco’s Pizzeria in Glen Burnie.
