Following the termination of the contract between Yum Brands and İş Gıda, thousands of workers working at KFC and Pizza Hut branches operating in Turkey have become unemployed. Employees continue to seek their rights on the grounds that they have not received their rights such as salary, compensation, overtime and annual leave.
In this context, KFC and Pizza Hut employees in İzmir came together in front of the KFC branch in Karşıyaka Çarşı and held a press release and protest. KFC Restaurant Manager Sara Aker made the statement on behalf of the employees. Aker described the company’s bankruptcy declaration as “suspicious” and emphasized that financial movements should be examined.
“Tangible and Intangible Assets Should Be Examined”
“During the period we worked under the İş-Gıda roof, we were deprived of our rights, a peaceful working environment and security. Following the termination of the franchise agreement of KFC and Pizza Hut, İş Gıda applied for bankruptcy with a debt of 7.7 billion liras. However, we believe that an artificial bankruptcy decision was made during this process. We believe that the company’s past records should be examined and the tangible and intangible assets transferred to Krispy Kreme and İş Teknik should be investigated. We believe that the loans received from Peyman were used in a way that deviated from their purpose during a period when we were experiencing financial difficulties. We also question the purchase of the rim factory belonging to İlkem Şahin during a period when we were experiencing supply problems.”
“A Mansion Worth 50 Million Was Purchased with Unpaid Premiums”
“There are many people who worked for days in January and could not receive their salaries. However, Krispy Kreme employees were given bonuses last month. İlkem Şahin, you say that you are fighting for ‘your child’s food’, but we have documented that during the same period, Krispy Kreme branches were transferred to Gökçe Elif Şahin’s name and that these transactions took place immediately after the bankruptcy decision. During this process, a mansion worth 50 million liras was purchased with our unpaid premiums for years. We also observed that all the belongings in the main building were stolen on February 5th.”
“We are in a Victimized Situation”
“The expenses shown in the company’s profit and loss reports have not been paid. It was said that our salaries would be covered by the guarantee fund, but it is stated that this fund will only make payments at the end of 3 months. How will we get by without a salary for three months? In addition, it was stated in our contract that working without permission at another company would result in the termination of the employment contract. Is it possible for us to work in another job with insurance during this period? Thousands of KFC and Pizza Hut employees are being victimized due to the company’s mismanagement of the process.”
“We Will Not Leave Our Labor to Anyone”
“Approximately 25 thousand people and their families are being victimized. The years of labor of the employees are being unfairly ignored by gaining time with the courts and trustees. We want to make our voices heard to the government and public authorities. We have been waiting for a solution for weeks, but we are faced with a situation that is getting more difficult every day. We will not leave the future of our children and our years of labor to anyone.”
