SauceBros Pizza, a tiny pizzeria tucked in a strip center in Plano, Texas, has earned national recognition as one of the country’s most innovative pizza spots. Bon Appétit, a leading food magazine, included SauceBros on its list of eight pizzerias nationwide “reimagining the craft” of pizza.
The magazine’s list highlights pizzerias across the U.S. that are redefining traditional pizza with nontraditional ingredients. SauceBros stands out by blending Bengali-Texas flavors, offering a distinctive twist to classic pizza. While other eateries experiment with toppings like brisket, khao-soi-spiced pork, and jerk chicken with caramelized plantains, SauceBros uses ingredients such as balachao, a fermented shrimp dish, and beef slow-cooked with garam masala.
SauceBros’ owners, Redwan Huda and Labib Tarafdar, both from Dhaka, Bangladesh, honed their cooking skills through YouTube during the pandemic. Their culinary creations include pizzas topped with cilantro pesto, mushrooms sautéed in ghee, and beef slow-cooked in mustard oil. While deeply rooted in Bengali flavors, Huda and Tarafdar also explore other influences, adding toppings like habaneros and beef taco meat mixed with salsa verde.
In an interview with Bon Appétit, Huda shared the duo’s vision, saying, “Why restrict ourselves with just Bengali flavors? Let’s do more.” The owners’ approach is not just about innovation but also representation, as Tarafdar emphasized in a 2024 interview: “This restaurant allows us to share our culinary heritage with a wider audience.”
Despite its small size and limited seating, SauceBros has garnered attention for its bold flavors and creative approach to pizza. Located near Plano Senior High, the pizzeria has quickly become a local favorite, with its owners selling pizzas at pop-ups before securing a permanent space in 2022.
Bon Appétit’s recognition highlights SauceBros’ place in the new wave of pizza innovation, signaling a shift toward more diverse and daring pizza creations. For those willing to explore bold new flavors, SauceBros is leading the charge.
