The Iowa City City Council recently faced a significant decision regarding the historic landmark designation of the Pagliai’s Pizza building located at 302 E. Bloomington St. The building, constructed in 1880 by Czech immigrant Joseph Slezak, boasts a rich history, having served various purposes over the years, including as a hotel, ballroom, and grocery store. Currently housing Pagliai’s Pizza, a laundromat, and residential units, the property has been in the hands of owner Gary Skarda, the fifth-generation owner, who listed it for sale in September 2023 due to maintenance concerns and declining health.
Despite Skarda’s desire to sell the property to a developer, citing difficulties in maintenance and rising costs, the city council faced pressure from the public to designate the building as a historic landmark. The decision, however, was deferred after a lively discussion at a recent council meeting, with over 10 members of the public expressing their opinions.
While supporters of the historic landmark designation emphasized the building’s cultural significance and economic benefits, Skarda voiced concerns about the constraints such a designation would impose on potential development opportunities. Additionally, he highlighted the importance of preserving the legacy of Pagliai’s Pizza, which has been a staple in the community since 1969.
The council’s decision to defer the vote allows for further consultation with the Planning and Zoning Commission before reconsideration at the next meeting on April 16. This delay underscores the complexity of balancing preservation efforts with property owner rights and economic considerations. The outcome of the upcoming vote will shape the future of this iconic Iowa City landmark.
