Giovanni’s Pizza in Albuquerque is marking two years since the tragic death of its owner, Rosario Zito, with a gesture of gratitude to first responders.

Zito was fatally shot during a robbery at his pizzeria nearly two years ago. To honor his memory, employees are offering free pizzas to Albuquerque police officers, firefighters, and detectives. Officers can receive a free pizza by showing up in uniform, while detectives can show their badges.

Zito’s family sees this as a way to express their appreciation to those who serve the community. “Rosario was always supportive of the police department and first responders,” said Harold Sammon, the store manager at Giovanni’s. “We thought this would be a fitting way to remember him. Last year, we were closed, and it was a somber time, but this year we want to make pizzas, do what we love, and continue to be inspired by Ros’s legacy.”

The suspect accused of Zito’s murder, Sylvan Alcachupas, is set to go on trial next month.
