A pizza chain in Washington, D.C., is receiving criticism for naming a dessert after the late Marion Barry. Many believe this decision undermines his complicated legacy, which includes both significant political contributions and personal scandals.
The chain, &pizza, defended the name, stating it “may not be the perfect dessert, but they’re the perfect dessert for D.C.” However, this explanation has not satisfied some residents.
“It’s very disrespectful to a man who did a lot for the city,” said Keith Taylor, a local Washingtonian.
Marion Barry served as the mayor of D.C. for four terms. In 1990, he became embroiled in a scandal after being arrested in a high-profile FBI sting for smoking crack cocaine.
On the &pizza website, the dessert is described with the phrase, “These knots will blow you away,” accompanied by a small pile of white powdered sugar. Many Washingtonians do not find this humorous and view it as mockery.
“He’s more than just that incident. It was a bad incident, and he served time for it,” Taylor explained. “You have to understand there’s a lot more to Marion Barry. He was a person who helped me out when I was younger. I was in the youth program. I was lucky to be part of the youth program Upward Bound.”
