Joseph Sullivan, the founder of Dough Boy Pizza Company, has gone from making Neapolitan-style pizzas in his mother’s garden during the COVID lockdown to catering for hundreds of wedding guests across the North West every year.
Before the pandemic, Mr. Sullivan, from Hoghton near Preston, worked as a private chef. When the lockdown left him without a job, he rediscovered his passion for making pizzas. He bought a portable Roccbox pizza oven and began experimenting with recipes in his mother’s garden.
What started as a hobby soon turned into a small business, with Mr. Sullivan selling pizzas to friends and family who appreciated the fresh meals during lockdown. He then organized a fundraiser, donating part of his profits to support NHS workers, which gained overwhelming community support. His pizzas quickly became popular, and he was selling out every week from a small catering tent.
As demand grew, Mr. Sullivan purchased a second Roccbox oven to keep up with production. He eventually moved his operations to the local village hall to accommodate the growing crowds.
To expand further, he invested in a horsebox trailer and converted it into a mobile pizzeria, allowing him to serve more customers. The expansion required him to hire staff, and after a challenging search, he built a dedicated team that shares his passion for Dough Boy.
Now, Dough Boy Pizza Company operates two pizza trailers and caters to more than 150 weddings each year. This success led to a nomination for Caterer of the Year at the Wedding Industry Awards 2024 in the North West. The company also caters for private business events, including the launch of Porsche’s new 911 and an upcoming MINI event.
Mr. Sullivan has become an Instagram ambassador for Gozney, sharing Dough Boy’s pizza adventures with over 100,000 followers.
What began as a small venture in a garden has now grown into a thriving business. With plans for a third trailer and expansion across the UK, Joseph Sullivan’s entrepreneurial journey is just getting started.
