A beloved pizzeria in Downtown Utica is closing its doors after decades of serving the community. Pizza Classic, owned by Tom and Joanne Torchia, has been a staple in the area since 1989. After 35 years in business, the Torchias have decided to retire, marking the end of an era for many local customers.
The news has prompted an outpouring of tributes from the community. One of Utica’s most recognized ambassadors, Mello Testa, shared a heartfelt message on his Facebook page, expressing gratitude and congratulations to the Torchias for their long run in the business.
Testa wrote: “I want to first congratulate my friends Joanne and Tom Torchia on their successful run of 35 years in Downtown Utica owning and operating Pizza Classic. Tom and I go way back, but it wasn’t until he came to me looking for a job at Mello’s Subs that I really got to know him. Over the years, he started as an employee, became a partner, and later opened his own business. When he decided to go out on his own, I encouraged him and offered any help I could. I’ve always known they would succeed. Tom and Joanne have built a thriving business and made an impact in the community, especially through their support of local youth programs.”
Testa continued, expressing his pride in their accomplishments and extending best wishes to the new owners of Pizza Classic. “I’m proud of everything they’ve achieved, not just in business but in giving back to the community. I wish the new owners much success and offer my full support to them, as I did for Tom and Joanne all these years.”
The Torchias’ decision to close the pizzeria marks the end of a chapter, but their legacy in Downtown Utica will surely be remembered.
