Nearly nine months after its opening, the Kamsack Pizza and Grill has become a popular spot in the community. Located inside the Petro-Canada outlet on Queen Elizabeth Boulevard, the restaurant has gained a positive response from locals, according to owner and manager Priyal Patel.
The restaurant opened on March 12 in a section of the Petro-Canada convenience store at 601 Queen Elizabeth Blvd. Patel, who is an immigrant from India, is one of the partners in Jai Setaliyaveer Gas Inc. The company, which also includes two Ontario investors and a U.S. partner, purchased the land and Petro-Canada assets from Rob Ritchie in 2021. The 3.2-acre property houses both the Petro-Canada station and a Subway restaurant, along with a nearby automated car wash.
Patel, who came to Canada in 2014 to study civil engineering, worked as a soil engineer in Toronto for six years. It was while working in Timmins, Ontario, that he learned about the Kamsack business opportunity.
“We visited Kamsack and found it to be a nice town, similar to the small town where I grew up,” Patel said.
In addition to opening Kamsack Pizza and Grill, Patel and his partners also launched a U-Haul service in the area, allowing customers to rent and return vehicles in the community.
While the Petro-Canada outlet operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the Kamsack Pizza and Grill is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. Both businesses will remain open throughout the Christmas holiday period.
The menu at Kamsack Pizza and Grill features 10 types of pizza, which customers can customize with various toppings. In addition to pizza, the restaurant offers burgers, gyros, souvlaki, fries, poutine, chicken wings, and salads. Milkshakes and a selection of ice cream flavors are also available.
Patel emphasizes that the restaurant uses fresh dough for its pizzas, in contrast to many other places that use frozen dough. The pizzas come in small, medium, and large sizes, and are priced slightly lower than those at other restaurants.
“Our pizzas are unique and are not made like typical chain pizzas,” Patel said. “We take pride in our quality.”
Recently, the restaurant began offering an in-town delivery service and plans to expand by delivering convenience store items. Future plans include bundling food items into special deals for customers.
Patel, who initially had reservations about opening in Kamsack, now feels confident in his decision. He appreciates the town’s proximity to Yorkton and its welcoming residents.
“When talking to business owners from other communities, we hear about challenges we don’t face here,” Patel said. “We’re happy to be doing business in Kamsack.”
