Heirloom Pizza, a local pizzeria in Plano, is serving up both New York-style and Detroit deep-dish pizzas at its small shop located at 2225 W. 15th St. The restaurant, which first opened in 2022, has seen a resurgence since new owner Justin Horton took over in 2024.

Horton, a Plano native with over a decade of experience working in restaurants, decided to pursue his dream of owning a business. After saving up, he found the space for sale and within a month, he had his own pizza shop.

“I always wanted to own my own business,” Horton says. “I saved up and found this little place for sale. A month later, I had my own pizza shop.”

Although Horton had no prior experience making pizza, he quickly immersed himself in learning the craft. “Pizza is like a work of art,” he says. Horton researched different styles and ingredients, eventually developing his own recipes.

The pizzeria’s classic pizza combines elements of New York and New Haven styles, known for its thin crust. However, it’s the Detroit deep-dish pizza that has been drawing the most attention lately. “It has an airy, crunchy, crispy crust that people love,” Horton says. The Detroit-style pizza is made in a rectangular pan and is limited to just 15 pies per day, making it a sought-after item that often sells out.

Horton stays true to the traditional Detroit deep-dish, with sharp, squared-off edges and a caramelized “wall” of melted cheese. The inside is soft and airy, and he uses Wisconsin brick cheese and a homemade tangy tomato sauce to complete the pizza.

In addition to the Detroit deep-dish, Heirloom Pizza offers other creative options. One standout is an all-white pizza with a garlic and three-cheese blend of mozzarella, ricotta, and Parmigiano-Reggiano. Another popular choice is Fred’s Steakhouse Special, a collaboration with Fred’s Downtown Philly next door, featuring their signature cheesesteak.

“Our dough is fermented for 48 to 72 hours,” Horton explains. “We use the same dough, but it’s proofed differently depending on what we’re making.”

The prices at Heirloom Pizza are affordable, with a 12-inch cheese pizza starting at $12 and specialty pizzas priced at $22 for a 16-inch pie.

The menu also includes four salads, such as Caprese and Greek, along with desserts like tiramisu, cannolis, and cheesecake. Horton prides himself on the quality of his cannolis, sourcing the shells from Sicily and making the cream from scratch.

“I try to put a lot of love and passion behind everything I do,” he says.
