Zomato’s year-end report for 2024 has revealed some surprising trends in India’s food delivery habits. While biryani continued to dominate as the top dish ordered, both pizza and biryani saw a slight decline in sales compared to the previous year.
Biryani and Pizza Sales Decline
In 2024, Zomato recorded over 9 crore biryani orders, maintaining its position as the most ordered dish on the platform. However, this was a drop from 10.1 crore orders in 2023, marking a decrease of nearly 95 lakh orders.
Pizza, which came in second place, also experienced a significant decline. In 2023, Zomato customers placed 7.45 crore pizza orders, but in 2024, that number dropped to 5.84 crore, a decrease of 1.6 crore orders. This represents a drop of over 20% in pizza sales year-on-year.
Other Food Trends
Although Zomato has not disclosed data on other dishes ordered, Swiggy shared some insights into its platform. Interestingly, dosa replaced pizza as the second most popular dish, with 2.3 crore orders in 2024. Despite the drop in pizza orders, biryani remained the clear favourite on both platforms. On Zomato, 3 biryanis were ordered every second, while on Swiggy, the rate was slightly over 2 biryanis per second.
Notable Highlights from the Report
Zomato’s report also highlighted some unique food-related events. One customer ordered 120 manchurian combos on a train to feed an entire bogey, showcasing a large-scale order for a group. In another eye-catching statistic, a Bengaluru resident set a record for the highest single bill at a restaurant, spending over ₹5 lakh.
As the year ends, the report shows a shift in consumer behaviour, with a noticeable decline in pizza and biryani orders, though they remain popular choices among Indian diners.
