Betsy and Greg Murdoch, Amy Peterson, and Antonio Luck, the team behind the popular Detroit church-turned-gathering-spot, The Congregation, are expanding their business ventures. The group plans to open a new pizzeria, called The Rectory, in the building next door at 1920 Atkinson St. The new restaurant is expected to open in the first quarter of 2025.
The project received zoning approval in 2020, with Peterson leading the development and construction efforts. The building, which has been vacant for nearly 30 years, will feature The Rectory on the first floor and two apartments on the second floor.
“We’re thrilled to expand and bring something fresh to our beloved neighborhood,” Peterson said in a social media post last month.
According to plans shared by the ownership group, The Rectory and The Congregation will share a large outdoor space, with a new porch connecting the two locations. Murdoch told Crain’s Detroit Business that The Rectory will have seating for about 24 people inside, with an additional 60 seats available on the three-season porch.
“We’re totally excited about everything,” Murdoch said. “My business partners and I live within two blocks of the businesses. The house has changed hands several times, and when we first walked in, it was gutted. We’re adding something we hope people will enjoy.”
