Marie’s Pizza & Liquors, a beloved landmark in Mayfair for 80 years, closed its doors in 2023. The property, located at 4125-29 W. Lawrence Ave., is now listed for sale.
The family-owned business was operated by three generations of the Karavidas family. Last fall, a segment of the television show Chicago Fire was filmed at the location, according to the Pulaski Elston Business Association.
The property sits on a 0.25-acre lot at the corner of Lawrence and Kedvale avenues. It is zoned B1-1, which permits various retail and office uses. However, any plans for residential redevelopment would likely require a zoning change.
DarwinPW Realty is handling the listing with an asking price of $1.7 million.
The building, which spans approximately 8,700 square feet, features a mural on its front windows. The artwork, designed by Cyd Smillie of Arts Alive Chicago, was created as part of a competition to promote the Art Institute of Chicago’s “Georgia O’Keeffe: ‘My New Yorks’” exhibition. The competition, called “Project Windows,” included retail window displays across the city, each paying tribute to O’Keeffe.
Amie Zander, executive director of the Pulaski Elston Business Association, expressed excitement about the mural’s impact on the community. “We are thrilled to bring public art to Mayfair,” she said last summer.
Smillie shared her thoughts on the project, noting, “Chicagohenge seemed to be the perfect fusion of O’Keeffe’s world and ours, using her flowers, palette, and city images.”
The property was put on the market in November, but Alderman Samantha Nugent’s office has not received any inquiries about rezoning the site.
