Plans for a Woody’s Pizza takeaway in Bacup have been rejected by Rossendale Borough Council. The proposed location, on St James Street in the former Old Boot café and wine bar, was denied due to concerns about obesity rates in the area.
The council highlighted that the Greensclough ward has an obesity rate of 20% among Year 6 pupils, which exceeds the policy threshold of 15%. Additionally, 11.6% of Reception class pupils are classified as obese, surpassing the 10% limit set for new hot food takeaways.
Council members also raised concerns about the potential impact on local residents. They warned that the takeaway could cause unacceptable levels of noise and disturbance, affecting the quality of life in nearby homes.
Mrs. Claire Bradley, a planning officer, also objected to the proposal, pointing out that Bacup already has 26 existing takeaways. She argued that the new business would not add to the variety of food options in the area, unlike the previous wine bar, which she felt enhanced the town’s evening offerings.
Woody’s Pizza had submitted a “healthy takeaway food statement,” showcasing their range of vegan, dairy-free, gluten-free, and plant-based options. They emphasized their commitment to using fresh, locally sourced ingredients and creating their sauces, dips, and doughs without excessive sugars or salts. Despite these claims, the council’s decision to reject the application remains in place.
