Descendant Detroit Style Pizza, a Toronto-based pizzeria, is bringing its Detroit-style pies to Boston’s Back Bay.
The new location, set to open in the Prudential Center at 800 Boylston St., will be the first U.S. outpost for Descendant. Owner Ike Tzakis confirmed the news to What Now Boston, adding that the menu will be similar to the two Toronto locations, but with one key difference: only 8×10-inch square pies will be offered—no slices or large sizes.
Descendant’s signature Detroit-style pizzas are square, with sauce spread over the top and extending to the edges. The menu includes classic options like cheese and pepperoni, as well as creative choices such as the Gat Daddy, Truff Guy, and Electric Avenue.
Tzakis said the pizza reflects Toronto’s multicultural influence. “We take from different ethnicities and different countries, and we incorporate it in pizza,” he explained.
As Toronto’s first Detroit-style pizzeria, Descendant has built a strong reputation for quality. The dough undergoes a 48-hour cold fermentation process, and every step is temperature-checked to ensure consistency. “We deliver a perfect pizza every time,” the restaurant states on its website.
Critics have also praised Descendant. Dave Portnoy of Barstool Sports, who has reviewed over 1,000 pizzerias, gave Descendant’s Leslieville location an 8.1 out of 10, calling it “as good as a Detroit pizza as you can have.”
Although an exact opening date is not yet set, Tzakis hopes to welcome customers to the Prudential Center location in the coming weeks.
