Boss’ Pizza and Chicken will host a fundraiser on Wednesday, January 15, to support Rapid City Rush head coach Scott Burt as he battles brain cancer.
The restaurant aims to raise funds with a goal of $10,000, according to owner Andrew Heinle. “It would be great if we could give him a check for $10,000,” Heinle said.
From 3 p.m. to 3 a.m. on January 15, any order placed online, in-person, or for delivery will contribute to the fundraiser.
Burt, who took a medical leave on December 6 due to ongoing headaches, was diagnosed with brain cancer weeks later. He started chemotherapy treatments at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, on January 2.
Heinle, who has personally experienced the loss of three people to health issues this year, felt compelled to help. “He gives his heart and soul to the community, to the Rush,” Heinle said. “It just felt good to be able to do something for him.”
Rush President Jared Reid also emphasized the community’s strong support for Burt during this difficult time. “Our partners and community are stepping up to help in an unprecedented situation,” Reid said.
The financial strain of cancer is significant, but Heinle hopes the fundraiser will provide some relief. “I hope this little bit brings a smile to your face,” Heinle said to Burt. “We’re all here cheering you on.”
Despite Burt’s health challenges, Spire Hockey, the ownership group of the Rapid City Rush, has publicly committed to keeping him as head coach and general manager. “When we have our guy, we take care of our people,” Reid said.
Burt and his wife Audrey have shared updates about his condition on the “Burtie’s Battle” Facebook page. To donate, visit Scott Burt’s GoFundMe.
The Rush will host the Tahoe Knight Monsters this weekend. The game on Friday begins at 7:05 p.m.
