Pizza enthusiasts gathered on Wooster Street in New Haven to celebrate National Pizza Week by visiting their favorite pizzerias.
At Frank Pepe’s Pizzeria, the dining room was nearly full during lunch. Customer Logan Keenan was enjoying a meal with two college friends from New York. Keenan said he brought them to Frank Pepe’s so they could try one of his favorite pizzas.
“They set the groundwork for what pizza should be, with that thin crust and fresh, high-quality sauce,” Keenan said.
Frank Pepe’s, which will celebrate its 100th anniversary in June, is known for its specialty pizzas, including the popular white clam pizza.
Zeneli’s Pizzeria, also located on Wooster Street, has gained attention for its fresh Naples-style pizza. Chef Gazmir Zeneli prepares his pizzas in a wood-burning oven using only imported Italian ingredients.
Zeneli expressed his appreciation for being part of the historic pizza scene on Wooster Street. “This is a great opportunity for people to try different types of pizza, and we are here to offer something new,” Zeneli said.
Local pizza expert Colin Caplan, a New Haven native, reflected on the city’s deep pizza roots. “The mastery is in the hands of these artists. It’s all about tradition—grandmas, aunts, uncles—everyone who passed down the craft. It’s in the heart, it’s in the hands, and that’s what makes it special,” Caplan said.
