A Moon Township pizza restaurant was shut down after health inspectors discovered an active sewage backup in its basement.
Allegheny County health inspectors closed Cardello Pizza on Monday following an inspection that uncovered 13 violations, including a serious issue with wastewater disposal.
The inspection report revealed that wastewater was backing up at three separate basement floor drains, indicating a complete blockage. Some of the sewage was near a clean dish drying rack, a freezer, the backdoor, and a shelf holding dry goods. The restaurant operator told inspectors the backup began on Sunday.
Inspectors advised that Cardello restrict access to the basement, clean and disinfect the affected areas, and request a reinspection once the issue is resolved.
Other violations noted in the report included the lack of a date marking system for prepared produce, excessive grease buildup, no accessible paper towels by the handwashing sink, improper food storage temperatures, and dust accumulation on the ventilation system. Some of these violations were repeats.
