Sbarro, typically associated with food courts in shopping malls, has a surprising presence outside these usual spots. While the chain is known for being a mall staple, it has been operating standalone locations since 2015, with the first opening in Columbus, Ohio. However, the chain has also experienced closures, such as the Times Square location in 2019. Notably, there is still a standalone Sbarro near Chicago, which continues to attract attention for its unusual placement outside a mall setting.
In recent years, Sbarro has aimed for further expansion, especially in travel rest stops and convenience stores starting in 2022. The chain also entered the UK market in 2020, even opening a drive-thru location there. Beyond the UK, Sbarro operates in various countries across Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America. However, the company faced backlash in 2023 for continuing operations in Russia despite the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Sbarro has also found its way into non-traditional locations, including military bases, the International Trade Center in Washington, D.C., and even the Pentagon, although the latter is now closed. Despite criticisms of its pizza quality, Sbarro remains a nostalgic choice for many. If you’re craving a slice and don’t live near a mall, there might just be a standalone Sbarro nearby.
