A pancake shop in Norwich, England, has attracted attention for charging nearly 1,000 yuan (about 100 pounds or 947 Hong Kong dollars) for a Hawaiian pancake. The dish, which features pineapple as a topping, was initially rejected by the restaurant because the owner and chef did not like the combination. However, customer demand forced the shop to offer the dish – albeit at a high price.

Lupa, a pancake shop known for its creative menu, humorously listed the dish on the menu with a note: “Yes, 100 pounds, you can order it. And champagne, order it together! You monster!” The high price reflects the staff’s reluctance to accept such a controversial ingredient.

Owner and chef express dislike for pineapple pancakes

Lupa’s owner Francis Woolf has publicly stated, “I hate pineapple on pancakes.” Chef Quin Jianoran echoed the sentiment, saying, “I love pineapple coladas (a pineapple-based cocktail), but pineapple pancakes? Absolutely not. I’d rather have a strawberry on my pancake than this tropical disaster.” Despite their hatred of pineapples, the shop is committed to catering to customers’ preferences and offering this option.

Pineapple topping is called the ‘bottom line’

Lupa is known for its innovative monthly specials, which include unique flavors such as ox knee and garlic fermented bean curd. However, the team considers pineapple pancakes to be their ‘bottom line’. In a fun challenge to customers, the shop announced that if enough online votes support the Hawaiian pancake, they will officially launch the pineapple colada cocktail.

Chef Quin, however, remains unconvinced. “If pineapple wins the vote, I’ll still make this pancake, but I won’t be happy about it,” he said. “The price might even go up to £200 (about HK$1,900) next time.”
