Uncle Mikey’s Pizza, a beloved staple in Murrells Inlet, closed its doors for the final time on Sunday, marking the end of an era after more than two decades in business. Owner Mike Zalloum announced that he has sold the business and is retiring.
Reflecting on his time at the restaurant, Zalloum expressed deep gratitude for the community’s support. “I’ll tell you what, I’m going to miss all of them—customers and the community,” he said with a smile. “And of course, I’ll miss your money too!” he added with laughter.
For over 25 years, Uncle Mikey’s Pizza has been a gathering spot for locals and visitors alike, serving up hand-tossed brick oven pizzas and fostering a sense of camaraderie. On its final day, many patrons stopped by to pay their respects and express their appreciation for the restaurant.
Zalloum shared that what he will miss most is the strong bonds he formed with the community. “Since Day 1, I never had a bad day. The people here are wonderful, especially the kids who touched my heart,” he said, fighting back tears. “I consider myself the most blessed and happy person in the world.”
Looking ahead, Zalloum plans to enjoy his retirement. “My dad was a great man. He always told me, ‘We live every day, and we die once. We should enjoy every second we live,’” he said, sharing his perspective on life after decades of hard work.
Although both the business and the building have been sold, Zalloum emphasized that he will be taking the name “Uncle Mikey’s Pizza” with him, and he extended his best wishes to the new owners.
The closure marks the end of a cherished chapter for the Inlet community, but Uncle Mikey’s legacy will undoubtedly live on in the memories of those who have enjoyed its pizza and hospitality over the years.
