From pandemic-era pizza pop-ups to a permanent establishment in Kansas City’s Martini Corner, Jhy Coulter has quickly transitioned her passion for pizza into a thriving business.
“I honestly didn’t know what I was getting myself into,” Coulter told KCUR’s Up To Date. “At first, I was doing it in my backyard on a small scale, taking orders via Instagram and text messages.”
Now, Coulter is the owner of Orange By: Devoured, a popular pizzeria that opened last fall in a once-vacant storefront located between Made in KC and Ludo’s Shuffleboard Bar on 31st Street.
Coulter’s pizza style is described as “neo-Neapolitan,” blending traditional pizza-making techniques with innovative combinations of ingredients. The current menu features creations like the “Jam Bam,” which pairs prosciutto with blueberry ricotta and thinly sliced potatoes; the “Herbie Birdie,” which includes herb-roasted chicken and butternut squash puree; and various vegan options.
When asked about the inspiration behind the pizzeria’s name, Coulter explained that the color orange evokes memories of her travels across Europe, which have greatly influenced both the menu and the restaurant’s vibrant atmosphere.
“Orange is a very positive color—it invites you in,” she said. “My time abroad, especially in Spain, was filled with vibrant colors and tile designs, and I wanted to bring that same energy to life here.”
