Philadelphia’s dining scene has been shaken by the closure of three prominent restaurants across the city this month. Here’s a look at the eateries that have closed their doors:
Mulherin’s Pizzeria (Center City)
A stylish wood-fired pizza spot in Center City, Mulherin’s Pizzeria, has shut down after less than a year in business. According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, the closure followed a legal dispute involving demands for $1.7 million in payments from six contractors of the building, in addition to claims made against the restaurant’s owner, Method Co., by the building’s landlord. The restaurant was located at 1175 Ludlow Street.
Big Ass Slices (Old City)
The popular Philly pizza shop and sports bar, Big Ass Slices, has seemingly closed permanently this month. A Reddit user shared a photo of a stop-work order from the Department of Revenue taped to the restaurant’s front door. The closure comes after a tragic incident in May, when an employee died following an altercation with a man during a shift. The owner later confirmed in a statement shared on Instagram that the restaurant was sold due to “a handful of reasons.” Big Ass Slices was located at 224 Market Street.
Pod (University City)
Renowned restaurateur Stephen Starr’s futuristic eatery, Pod, closed on Saturday, February 22, just shy of its 25th anniversary. Famous for its color-changing pod seating and sushi conveyor belt, Pod was a standout in University City and was Starr’s third restaurant in Philadelphia. The restaurant was located at 3636 Sansom Street.
Each of these closures marks the end of a chapter for Philadelphia’s vibrant restaurant scene, leaving residents and visitors with a sense of nostalgia for the dining experiences these spots once offered.
