Pizzeria Barbarella, a beloved pizza destination in East Vancouver, has announced its sudden closure after over ten years of operation. The popular eatery, located at 654 East Broadway, confirmed the news on social media over the weekend, just a day before its final service on Sunday, March 2.
The closure marks a bittersweet farewell for loyal patrons who have frequented the spot for years. In a heartfelt message shared on Instagram and Facebook, the owners expressed deep gratitude for the support of the community.
“We are incredibly thankful to our loyal customers, wonderful suppliers, and truly amazing staff,” the post read. “Although financial success was often elusive, Barbarella became a very special place because of all of you. It’s been an honor to be part of this community.”
The owners reflected on the many celebrations and milestones shared at the restaurant, including date nights, birthdays, and casual dinners. They also highlighted the comfort the restaurant provided to those seeking a cozy atmosphere for a great meal, especially on rainy nights.
Pizzeria Barbarella was known for its inviting, rustic setting, offering a menu that combined delicious starters, pizzas, and a variety of beverages. Children enjoyed pizza slices paired with juice or milk, followed by a decadent chocolate mousse dessert. Adults could choose from rotating craft beers, prosecco, and cider on tap. The restaurant’s pizza offerings, such as the funghi and miele piccante varieties, were especially popular, featuring unique ingredients like grana padano and chili-infused honey.
Fans of the pizzeria took to social media to express their sadness and share memories of the beloved neighborhood spot. One commenter from Catoro Pets wrote, “So sad to hear this, a huge blow to the neighborhood! We will miss our friendly pizza neighbors.” Another said, “Sad news for today, thank you for being part of our lives. The memories are still here and always will be.”
In their farewell message, the owners also shared a personal note of appreciation for their staff. “We’re especially happy to know that several children around the world were born to parents who met while working together at Barbarella,” they wrote. “For those former staff who met their significant others here but haven’t had kids yet, no pressure—do what’s right for you.”
The pizzeria concluded by emphasizing its pride in having created a positive work environment where employees could thrive and showcase their talents while serving some of the city’s best pizza.
