Ringo Starr, the legendary drummer of The Beatles, has revealed a surprising fact: he has never eaten pizza. The admission came during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! where he was promoting his 21st studio album, Look Up.
When Kimmel asked Starr to clear up rumors about himself, the topic of pizza quickly came up. “I’ve never had a pizza,” Starr said, confirming the long-standing speculation to the shock of the audience. “Or a curry,” he added, explaining that he avoids certain foods due to allergies. “With pizza, you don’t know what you’re putting in it half the time. Or the curry. So I’m strict with myself since it makes me ill immediately.”
Kimmel, with a touch of humor, responded, “I used to think you had the greatest life, and now I realize mine is better.” Starr jokingly replied, “Yours is better because you’ve had a pizza.”
Starr’s decision to steer clear of pizza is also in line with his vegetarian lifestyle, making the revelation all the more surprising given his previous role as a spokesperson for Pizza Hut. In 1995, he appeared in a widely remembered ad for the chain, promoting their newly introduced stuffed crust pizza. The 30-second commercial featured Starr alongside members of The Monkees, teasing a potential Beatles reunion. However, the punchline revealed the Monkees, not The Beatles, and all four musicians were shown biting into a pizza crust — a scene that, in hindsight, is ironic considering Starr’s personal dietary restrictions.
The announcement comes as Starr’s latest album, Look Up, has received commercial success since its release on January 10. His first full-length album since 2019’s What’s My Name, Look Up features collaborations with Alison Krauss, Molly Tuttle, Lucius, Larkin Poe, and Billy Strings. The album debuted at No. 7 on the Billboard Top Album Sales chart and also charted in the top ten of both the Indie Store Album Sales (No. 2) and Top Rock Albums (No. 7) charts. Additionally, it marked a career milestone for Starr, reaching No. 27 on the Top Country Albums chart.
Starr shared his long-standing love for country music in a recent interview with Billboard, revealing that he was introduced to the genre before joining The Beatles. “We got plenty of it in Liverpool,” he explained, noting that merchant navy sailors brought country music to the city, and country bands often toured there.
Despite the shock of his pizza revelation, it’s clear that Starr’s latest musical endeavors are far from “ill” – they are thriving both critically and commercially.
