The ongoing debate over which city serves the best pizza in the United States has received a fresh perspective thanks to a new study from real estate company Clever. The study places Boston ahead of iconic pizza cities like New York City and New Haven.
Using data from sources including the U.S. Census, Yelp, and a survey of 2,000 American adults, the study assessed cities based on four key factors: reputation, passion for pizza, affordability, and availability.
In addition to ranking individual cities, the study also evaluated the best pizza states, with Massachusetts securing the No. 9 spot.
Boston’s Pizza Ranking: A Closer Look
Boston earned the third spot on the list of top pizza cities in the country, with an impressive score of 97.7 out of 100 across all categories. The city’s strong performance was driven in part by the affordability of pizza. Residents spend less than 2% of their median household income on a weekly order of cheese and pepperoni pizza, placing Boston fourth in the nation for affordability.
The city’s pizza passion score, a measure of local enthusiasm for pizza, was notably high at 80.4 out of 100, nearly 18% above the national average.
The study also highlighted that Boston is particularly famous for its Greek-style pizzas, a local specialty that adds to the city’s diverse pizza offerings.
