Toronto Public Health (TPH) is alerting the public to potential measles exposure following an incident involving an individual who has tested positive for the virus. The exposure may have occurred on Friday, March 21, 2025, at two separate locations: a popular Toronto pizzeria and during two VIA Rail trips.
Locations of Possible Exposure
Pizzeria Libretto – 155 University Ave., from 11:50 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
VIA Rail Train 82 – Train Car 3, traveling from London to Toronto, from 6:05 to 10:50 a.m.
VIA Rail Train 83 – Train Car 3, traveling from Toronto to London, from 4:10 to 8:30 p.m.
Risk of Measles
Measles is a highly contagious virus that spreads through the air when an infected person breathes, coughs, sneezes, or talks. It can linger in the air or on surfaces for up to two hours, making it possible for people to become infected by breathing contaminated air or touching an infected surface and then touching their eyes, nose, or mouth.
What You Should Do
TPH advises anyone who may have been exposed at the above locations to check their vaccination records and monitor for symptoms through April 4, 2025. If you’re unsure about your vaccination status, a blood test can determine if you have immunity to measles.
Measles Symptoms
Common symptoms of measles include
-
Fever
-
Runny nose
-
Cough
-
Red eyes
-
A red rash that begins on the face and spreads downward
-
Small blue-white spots (Koplik spots) inside the mouth and throat
Vaccination Recommendations
The measles vaccine is usually administered at 12 months of age, with a second dose given between four and six years of age. Anyone who has not received two doses of the measles vaccine or has not previously had measles is at risk.
TPH urges the public to take appropriate precautions to prevent the spread of the virus and seek medical advice if they suspect exposure or symptoms.
