Giordano’s, the renowned Chicago-based pizzeria chain famous for its deep-dish stuffed pizza, is set to open its first location in the Washington, D.C. area. The new restaurant will take over a spacious 7,000-square-foot site at 600 14th St. NW, located near Metro Center, an area that has been vacant since December 2023 when Todd English’s MXDC Cocina Mexicana moved to a new location.
According to a report by the Washington Business Journal, the new Giordano’s location will serve as the flagship restaurant for the brand in the D.C. metropolitan area. While no exact opening date has been announced, the pizzeria is expected to bring its iconic Chicago-style fare to the region in the coming months.
Founded in 1974 by brothers Efren and Joseph Boglio, Giordano’s started its journey in Chicago, Illinois, where the family brought their mother’s recipe for Italian Easter Pie from their hometown near Torino, Italy. Over the years, they transformed this family recipe into the now-famous Chicago-style stuffed pizza, a dish with a thick, deep-dish crust, layers of gooey cheese, various toppings, and a second layer of dough covered in tomato sauce. This pizza style has become synonymous with Chicago cuisine.
The opening of the D.C. location marks another milestone in Giordano’s rapid expansion. The brand has grown significantly since its humble beginnings, now boasting over 70 locations in states across the country, including Illinois, Florida, Indiana, Colorado, Iowa, Minnesota, Ohio, Nevada, and Wisconsin. The D.C. restaurant will not only introduce the signature stuffed pizza to a new market but also expand the chain’s growing presence in the Mid-Atlantic.
Giordano’s aims for the D.C. location to serve as a flagship restaurant, with potential plans to open more locations in the greater D.C. area in the future. However, for now, the focus is on successfully launching the brand’s first restaurant in the region and introducing locals to the beloved pizza style.
In addition to its famed stuffed pizza, Giordano’s menu features a wide array of Italian-American dishes, including thin-crust pizzas, pasta, sandwiches, salads, and a variety of appetizers. The brand also offers catering services, allowing customers to bring the Giordano’s experience to private events. For pizza lovers outside of the restaurant’s locations, Giordano’s provides the option to ship frozen pizzas nationwide, allowing fans across the country to enjoy a taste of Chicago from their own homes.
The arrival of Giordano’s in Washington, D.C. adds to the city’s vibrant culinary scene and provides a new option for pizza enthusiasts who crave a taste of Chicago-style pizza in the heart of the nation’s capital. As the opening approaches, many are eagerly awaiting their chance to experience the iconic deep-dish pizza that has been a favorite of Chicagoans for over four decades.
