On 4/20, the perfect pairing of pizza and pot came to life in San Francisco’s Hayes Valley, where Fig & Thistle Apothecary, a female-run marijuana dispensary, hosted a special pizza pop-up to celebrate the high holiday. For Leo Espinosa, who traveled from Glen Park, the event was the ultimate way to relax. He enjoyed a pre-roll of Blue Jesus while indulging in pizza—one hand on his slice, the other on his joint.
“The experience here is always great. It’s like a family,” said Espinosa, 31. “Having pizza with it is added comfort. It’s like being in my living room with two great things: pizza and weed.”
Stacy Cohen, a regular attendee, wore her “High” hat, a tradition she’s upheld every year on 4/20 since the term was first coined in the 1970s by San Rafael High School students. The term “4/20” refers to their daily 4:20 p.m. gatherings for herbal refreshment. “It’s a worldwide high holiday, and I love coming to Fig & Thistle because they have the best high-end product,” said Cohen, as she enjoyed a pre-roll of Sonoma Farm Blue Jesus, a special 4/20 offering. “I definitely always have the munchies, so I’m looking forward to trying the pizza pop-up. It’s a perfect combination.”
The pizza and dispensary were conveniently located no more than 10 feet apart, offering customers a seamless experience. To celebrate its expansion, Fig & Thistle recently opened a new smoke room, situated next to a Sunday-only pizza pop-up on the other side of a shared wall. The move comes at a time when many other dispensaries are downsizing or closing.
Nina Tang, the dispensary’s manager, explained the significance of the celebration: “4/20 is a time to celebrate for people who love the plant. It’s about destigmatizing cannabis and having some fun. Getting high is the fun part, and pizza is necessary to satisfy the munchies.”
While 4/20 traditionally falls on weekdays, this year’s Sunday date was a bit of a buzzkill for some, as it eliminated the opportunity for students to skip school and partake. Additionally, the long-standing 4/20 smokeout at Hippie Hill in Golden Gate Park was canceled for the second consecutive year due to financial struggles within the cannabis industry. In its place, the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department partnered with Volo Sports to host the “Peace, Love and Volo Field Day” at Robin Williams Meadow, drawing an estimated 400 participants for various sports activities.
For those seeking a different kind of fun, the pizza pop-up offered a range of delicious slices. Outtasight Pizza served up $8 slices, including the “Gut Buster,” topped with chili and hot dogs, and the “Weed Eater,” a vegetarian option. While the pizza wasn’t infused with cannabis, the experience of enjoying it in the dispensary’s smoke room made it the perfect complement to the day’s festivities.
