The Wiregrass Commons Mall, once home to a bustling food court, is seeing a resurgence with the opening of 2XL Pizza, a new eatery that promises to bring New York-style pizza with a local twist to the area. This marks the first business to operate in the mall’s food court in recent months, offering a ray of hope for the mall’s revival.
Owned by Robert Crawford and Andrea Mitchell, who recently relocated to the Wiregrass area, 2XL Pizza aims to breathe new life into the mall while serving up high-quality pizza. Crawford expressed his enthusiasm for both the business opportunity and community impact. “We saw an opportunity to help the community and provide a business that people actually enjoy. It’s been a hit,” he said.
The opening of 2XL Pizza is particularly meaningful for long-time Wiregrass residents, who remember a time when the mall’s food court was a lively gathering place, complete with popular spots like Dante’s. Now, some locals hope that the new pizzeria will bring back foot traffic and revitalize the area.
Chris Hatcher, a Wiregrass resident, shared his optimism for the mall’s future. “It’s not going to hurt. It’s the first time I’ve been here in at least a year, so I think it will bring people in at least to get some pizza,” Hatcher said.
Crawford is hopeful that 2XL Pizza’s success will inspire other businesses to join the mall, filling empty spaces and contributing to the food court’s revival. “There’s plenty of space and opportunity for everyone. We welcome other businesses to come in and help bring this food court—and this mall—back to life,” he added.
2XL Pizza is making a bold statement with its signature 28-inch pizza, claimed to be the largest in Alabama. But does the taste live up to the size? According to customers who’ve already sampled the pies, the answer is yes.
Larry McKenzie, a customer, was impressed by the pizza’s quality. “I ate some of their pizza yesterday, and I had to make sure my mind wasn’t playing tricks on me. It’s good—you don’t get this type of quality everywhere,” he said.
Logan Parker, another local, echoed McKenzie’s sentiments, praising the pizza’s taste and freshness. Meanwhile, Paul Truman, a visitor from the Boston area, was pleasantly surprised by the pizza’s authenticity. “This is good; it stacks up,” Truman said. “I wouldn’t say it just because I’m on film. If they keep serving this pizza nice and hot, word will get around.”
2XL Pizza is open seven days a week, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and is ready to serve its signature large pies to hungry mall-goers and locals alike.
With the opening of 2XL Pizza, there’s hope that Wiregrass Commons Mall may once again become a vibrant destination for shopping, dining, and community engagement.
