Test Driving Unlock: Unique Neapolitan Pizzas in Hackney Wick

by Emma

Unlock, the latest addition to the vibrant landscape of Hackney Wick, is the brainchild of Napoli-born siblings Arianna and Giovanni Izzo. Arianna, with previous experience as a pastry chef at Naples bakery, Tarallificio Leopoldo, joins forces with her brother to introduce a Neapolitan pizza restaurant that doubles as a platform for showcasing both local and Italian art.

Located along the canal, Unlock is a short, picturesque stroll from Hackney Wick overground station. Upon arrival, guests are greeted by the latest artistic collaboration adorning the restaurant’s exterior, a testament to its commitment to artistry and creativity.

For those seeking a pre-pizza beverage, Crate Brewery offers a convenient pitstop for a pint before or after your visit. Alternatively, Unlock boasts a bar section, inviting patrons to indulge in a selection of libations, including a concise wine list starting at £35 a bottle, Moretti beer on tap, and a tempting array of cocktails priced around £15 each.

As for the culinary offerings, Unlock presents a concise yet tantalizing menu of starters and snacks, featuring options such as smoked stracciatella salad (£8) and meatballs with fries (£9). However, the true star of the show lies in the pizza selection.

Classic pizza aficionados will find solace in offerings like the margherita and quattro formaggio, priced between £11 and £13. Yet, it’s the gourmet section that truly captivates, boasting nine pizzas adorned with unconventional ingredients rarely found in standard pizzerias. From Jerusalem artichoke cream to panko tempura prawns with pistachio cream, each creation promises a culinary adventure.

During our visit, we had the pleasure of sampling two standout pizzas: “The Unlock” featuring mozzarella, truffle paste, deep-fried mushrooms, prosciutto crudo, and parsley (£18.50), and “The Lab” showcasing aubergine cream, mozzarella, mortadella, fresh ricotta, and lime zest (£16). Both offerings impressed with their robust dough and harmonious blend of unconventional toppings.

While Unlock may not be a destination pizzeria that warrants a cross-town journey, it undoubtedly merits consideration for those in the East. With its inventive menu, welcoming ambiance, and potential for future gourmet pairings with cocktails, Unlock promises an enticing dining experience worth exploring.
