A longstanding fixture in Portland’s vibrant pizza scene bids farewell as Pizza Joint announces the closure of both its Portland and South Portland locations, marking the end of a 44-year legacy.
Sunday marked the final day of operation for Pizza Joint, evoking poignant emotions among patrons and staff alike. Established in 1977, the pizzeria had been a cherished gathering spot for locals and visitors alike, fostering cherished memories and culinary traditions over the decades.
Manager Patty Young reflected on the bittersweet atmosphere surrounding the closure, noting the outpouring of support from loyal customers who returned for one last slice. “Some customers, longtime customers, have just poked their head in to say hi and wish us well,” shared Young. “I’ve seen some folks I haven’t seen for years, and they’ve moved away, driving hours just to come here, which is really awesome. It’s been quite emotional and overwhelming,” she expressed.
The decision to close came after years of observing declining business trends, signaling the end of an era for Pizza Joint. However, the warmth and camaraderie shared within its walls resonated with patrons, evident in the hundreds of goodbye messages and fond reminiscences shared on social media since the announcement.
As the curtains close on Pizza Joint’s storied chapter in Portland’s culinary landscape, it leaves behind a legacy of community, camaraderie, and cherished memories, forever etched in the hearts of its patrons.
