A Las Vegas pizza shop has uncovered a troubling case of identity theft involving another restaurant posing as them and several others on a popular food delivery platform.
The small business, which does not utilize Uber Eats for its delivery services, became aware of the issue when a customer called about an order placed through the app. Upon investigation, they were shocked to discover multiple restaurants impersonating them on the platform.
In a video posted on social media, Christina Martin, the owner of the pizza shop, expressed her disbelief at the situation. She recounted how she found her restaurant’s name, menu items, and photos listed on Uber Eats, despite never having partnered with the platform.
Determined to get to the bottom of the matter, Martin took matters into her own hands. She traced the address provided for order pickups, identified the restaurant fulfilling the orders, and reached out to its owner. However, she encountered resistance and denial from the owner, who claimed ignorance of the situation.
Further investigation revealed that her pizza shop was not the only victim of this impersonation scheme. Martin discovered 15 other local businesses facing similar issues.
Alarmed by the extent of the problem, Martin took decisive action, even conducting a test order to witness the deception firsthand. She observed an Uber driver picking up a pizza from the impostor restaurant, confirming the fraudulent activity.
Upon being contacted by FOX5 News, Uber Eats responded that they are actively investigating the matter. Additionally, efforts were made to reach out to the restaurant identified as the source of the fraudulent orders, but they were unavailable for comment at the time of inquiry.
As the investigation unfolds, Martin and other affected business owners remain determined to put an end to this deceptive practice and protect their businesses from further harm.
