In Mandan, North Dakota, Black Lions Pub stands as more than just a place for cold beer and delicious hand-crafted pizza. Behind its welcoming doors, co-owners Garrett Hooker and Robert Puttre, both veterans of the Black Lions Infantry Unit, have built a haven dedicated to honoring their community, particularly veterans past, present, and future.
For Hooker and Puttre, the Black Lions hold profound personal significance. “Black Lions means a lot to me. That’s the unit I served with my entire army career. I was in for about four years. I got out of high school and went straight into the army and found a quick home and family with the Black Lions unit,” explained Puttre.
The pub’s atmosphere resonates with a palpable veteran connection, adorned with plaques and photos donated by community members and featuring a table solemnly dedicated to fallen and missing soldiers. Within these walls, the spirit of camaraderie and shared experiences permeates every corner.
Hooker and Puttre understand that the challenges they faced together in the military forged a bond that endures, binding them as brothers. “That instant camaraderie just came back together, so he’s my best friend, and now we spend almost every minute of the day working together now, so, it kind of replaced that as well,” shared Puttre.
Despite their primary roles of serving up pizza and drinks, Hooker and Puttre share a common mission: to honor and uplift the community they serve and represent. Beyond their culinary offerings, Black Lions plans to host a variety of community events, ranging from veteran-focused affairs to live music, as they settle into their new space.
Through their establishment, Hooker and Puttre have created more than just a place to dine and unwind; they have crafted a sanctuary where veterans and their supporters can gather, connect, and feel valued. Black Lions Pub and Pizza stands as a testament to the enduring bonds forged in service and the unwavering commitment to supporting those who have served.
