Pizza Hut Japan is shaking up the traditional pizza scene with its latest creation, the “Super New Star Umegherita,” a unique twist on the classic Margherita pizza. While the original Margherita is renowned for its simplicity with tomatoes, mozzarella, basil, and olive oil, Pizza Hut Japan is adding a distinctly Japanese flavor with the inclusion of ume, or Japanese plums.
Each slice of the Umegherita boasts a whole umeboshi (pickled plum), sourced from Tokyo umeboshi specialty stand Tachigui Umeboshiya. Pizza Hut Japan meticulously selected the plum variety for this creation, settling on Shirara plums from Wakayama, Japan’s leading ume-producing prefecture. The plums, known for their rich texture and harmonious blend of sour and sweet notes, are accompanied by a unique cheese blend of mozzarella and gouda, topped with a pink ume sauce for an extra burst of plum flavor.
Replacing traditional basil, the Umegherita features oba leaves, also known as “Japanese basil,” adding a distinct herbal aroma. To complement the umeboshi’s natural saltiness, the crispy crust is finished with a sprinkle of salt.
The Umegherita is currently available until June 12, offered in a medium size for 2,600 yen (approximately $16.75 USD). Customers can also opt for a comparison pack featuring a regular Margherita pizza alongside the Umegherita for 3,500 yen, or pair it with two cans of alcoholic beverages for 2,950 yen.
Pizza Hut Japan’s innovative creation reflects a willingness to push culinary boundaries, acknowledging that plum pizza might be an acquired taste best enjoyed with a side of liquid courage.
