Domino’s Sparks Controversy with Pineapple Crust Pizza Release in Japan

by Emma

Domino’s, known for its innovative approach to pizza, has stirred up debate in Japan with its latest release: pineapple crust pizza. As the leading pizza delivery chain in Japan, Domino’s is no stranger to pushing boundaries with its menu offerings.

This month, Domino’s is diving headfirst into the age-old debate of whether pineapple belongs on pizza. Introducing two pineapple-heavy pizzas accompanied by a polarizing new crust, Domino’s invites customers to take a stance on this contentious issue.

Dubbed “Tropical Twist,” the new crust features a fusion of mozzarella cheese and pineapple sauce, promising a “refreshing and fruity harmony” with every bite. Available in both regular and extreme Quattro versions, these pizzas offer a bold twist on the classic pineapple topping.

The Tropical Twist Quattro boasts a combination of toppings like Tropical, Spicy, Garlic Master, and Korean Short Ribs, while the Extreme Pineapple Twist Quattro caters to diehard pineapple enthusiasts with options like Ham and Pineapple, Ham, Pineapple, and Jalapeño, Beef Short Ribs and Pineapple, and Pineapple, Smoked Bacon, and BBQ sauce.

Prices start at 3,390 yen (US$21.68) for a small Tropical Twist Quattro and 3,450 yen for an Extreme Pineapple Twist Quattro. Additionally, the Tropical Twist crust can be added to any pizza on the menu for an extra 440 yen for a small-sized pizza.

For those craving more tropical flavors, Domino’s offers Tropical Cheese Twist Breads and Premium Shake Tropical Coconut, complete with pineapple sauce and a sprinkling of coconut on top.

However, the most surprising element of the pizza crust is the inclusion of shredded coconut, which Domino’s says was added during testing to enhance the pineapple flavor. This bold move is set to ignite further debate among pizza enthusiasts.

To capitalize on the controversy, Domino’s has launched the “Pineapple x Pizza Yes or No General Election 2024,” allowing customers to vote for or against pineapple on pizza online and through social media platforms. A special media event featuring industry experts debating the topic kicked off the campaign, with celebrity Ricky advocating for pineapple on pizza and Italian chef Angelo Cozzolino firmly opposing it.

Domino’s will open a special voting station inside Shinjuku Station on May 27, offering samples of the new product to encourage customers to weigh in on the debate.

Despite differing opinions on pineapple as a pizza topping, Domino’s commitment to fostering healthy debate on divisive topics is commendable, providing a platform for both sides to express their views.
