TV chef Nigella Lawson has sparked outrage in Italy by creating a pizza without crusts. The dish, which Lawson named Crustless Pizza, did not sit well with many, who felt it deviated too far from tradition.
Critics online were quick to voice their opinions. One fan remarked that the dish resembled an “omelette,” while others lamented the absence of the crust, often considered the best part of the pizza.
An Italian food enthusiast even called the creation “provocative,” emphasizing the deep cultural roots of traditional pizza in Italy.
Nigella Lawson, a well-known figure in the culinary world, made this dish her Recipe of the Day. The crustless pizza featured cheese, tomato, chorizo, ham, and sweetcorn as toppings.
Lawson, 64, acknowledged the unconventional nature of the recipe, saying, “I wouldn’t want to go bandying around the name of this recipe in Naples, but this is what I call it. If it helps, think of it as a cheese toastie, only without the bread. I made this so often when my children were young.”
However, not everyone was convinced. Luigi, an Italian critic, responded, “I’ll call it a cheese toastie. You like to provoke the Italians.”
Lawson is no stranger to controversial food combinations, previously raising eyebrows with dishes like spaghetti with Marmite and caramel on potatoes.
Robin Finesilver commented, “This, and your spaghetti and Marmite, were my ex’s favourite recipes of yours. She’s not allowed to cross the Italian border.”
Billie McDiarmid expressed disappointment, saying, “Part of a pizza’s charm is the crust.”
Stephen Donophan simply stated, “But I love the crusts.”
Another user joked, “Looks like an omelette.”
Sara Heyl added, “I like the name ‘Cheese Toastie’ better than ‘crustless pizza.’”
