A recent study has revealed Ireland’s most popular pizza toppings, with pepperoni securing the top spot. The research, conducted by Dutch lifestyle magazine Dailybase, analyzed the number of monthly searches in Ireland for 50 different pizza toppings. The data was gathered using search terms such as “X pizza,” “X pizza topping,” and “where to buy X pizza.”

1. Pepperoni

Pepperoni emerged as Ireland’s favorite, with an average of 681.67 monthly searches. This popular cured meat, made from pork or a blend of pork and beef, is seasoned with paprika and chili, along with black pepper, garlic, and mixed herbs. Its spicy, smoky flavor makes it a beloved choice for many pizza lovers.

2. Anchovy

Anchovies came in second place, averaging 460.83 monthly searches. These small, oily fish are packed with Omega-3 fatty acids, offering numerous health benefits. Their strong, salty, and umami-rich taste makes them a bold yet appealing topping for those who enjoy a more adventurous pizza experience.

3. Mozzarella

Mozzarella ranked third with 277.50 average monthly searches. This semi-soft cheese, made from cow or buffalo milk, is known for its mild flavor and delightful stretchiness when melted. It is a key ingredient in the classic Margherita pizza, loved for its simplicity and richness.

4. Nduja

Nduja, a spicy, spreadable sausage from Italy, has gained popularity in Ireland, with 215.83 average monthly searches. Often paired with hot honey, this topping adds a perfect balance of heat and sweetness to any pizza, making it a fast-growing favorite.

5. Pesto

Pesto rounds out the top five with 194.17 average monthly searches. Made from crushed basil leaves, pine nuts, parmesan or pecorino cheese, garlic, and oil, pesto can be used as a pizza base or added on top of other ingredients, providing a fresh and flavorful twist.

Daniël de Voer, chief editor of Dailybase, commented on the study’s findings:

“Pizza’s popularity lies in its versatility—toppings can be customized to suit individual tastes, creating a unique pizza experience for everyone. It’s intriguing to see the diversity of toppings favored in each country, reflecting influences from various European cuisines. With summer in full swing, now is the perfect time to explore any toppings on the list that you haven’t tried yet.”

This study highlights how Ireland’s pizza preferences are shaped by a mix of traditional and modern tastes, with influences from across Europe making their mark on this universally loved dish.
