Wollongong’s Pizza Scene Among Australia’s Best, Ranking in Top 10

Wollongong has claimed its spot in the national spotlight, securing a place among Australia’s top 10 cities for pizza. The city ranked ninth in a new list created by outdoor pizza oven brand, Gozney.

You might not have known there was such a thing as national pizza rankings, but Gozney took on the task. The rankings were based on factors like the number of pizza restaurants per capita, the ratings of those restaurants, and the volume of Google searches for pizza-related terms in each area.

It may sound a bit cheesy, but Wollongong’s inclusion in the top 10 is worth celebrating. Locals, especially those with deep Italian roots and a passion for good food, wouldn’t find it surprising. The city is brimming with diverse pizza options, from upscale spots like Kneading Ruby to more casual favorites like Gourmet Pizza World.

Whether you’re in the mood for pizza with wine and pasta or prefer a late-night slice after a night out, Wollongong has something to satisfy every craving. Wood-fired pizza enthusiasts have plenty of choices as well, with popular spots like Osteria Lume and Lupa Woodfired Pizzas offering authentic options.

Wollongong’s pizza scene is also inclusive, catering to gluten-free, dairy-free, and vegan preferences at places like Da Orlando. And for those days when only a quick fix from Domino’s will do, the city has you covered there too.

According to Gozney’s ranking, Wollongong boasts 40 pizza places, with 19 of them rated four stars or higher. The city sees an average of 31,800 Google searches per year for pizza-related terms, placing it alongside major cities like Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane.

Christian Pohio, Gozney Australia’s General Manager, highlighted the rise of street pizza as a major influence in making pizza more accessible across the country. This makes Wollongong’s ranking even more impressive, given the challenges food trucks face under current Wollongong City Council policies—a situation that some outgoing councillors have pushed to change.

“Good quality pizza is becoming more and more attainable, whether it’s going to your local pizza joint or making it at home,” said Pohio. “Gone are the days of only relying on your local pizza chain delivery service with a nine-dollar meal deal. Access to restaurant-worthy pizza has never been easier.”
