As Japan prepares to celebrate the annual tradition of “tsukimi” (moon-viewing) this autumn, Pizza Hut has unveiled two special edition pizzas to mark the occasion. Tsukimi, which honors the harvest moon, is set for September 17 this year, and Pizza Hut is enhancing the experience with a unique twist—a “shadow picture box” that is being hailed as an industry first.
The star of the Tsukimi menu is two varieties of pizza, available in medium and large sizes, with egg as the central ingredient. The term “tsukimi” in the food industry often refers to dishes that feature eggs, as the yolk is reminiscent of a full moon.
One of the pizzas is topped with two soft-boiled eggs and cheese, complemented by flame-grilled teriyaki chicken and a rich mayonnaise sauce, creating a savory and satisfying flavor. The other variety features the same soft-boiled eggs and cheese but adds the heat of bulgogi beef, gochujang (a red chili paste), and mayonnaise, offering a more intense taste experience.
For solo diners, the two pizzas are also available in “My Box” versions, priced at 1,090 yen for takeout and 1,400 yen for delivery.
In addition to the pizzas, Pizza Hut is offering a limited-time “Shadow Picture Box” with medium-sized Tsukimi pizzas. This special feature is available in limited quantities and adds a playful element to the moon-viewing tradition.
In Japan, rabbits are commonly associated with the moon, as the surface of the moon is said to resemble a rabbit pounding rice, a contrast to the “man in the moon” seen in many Western cultures. While there’s no actual rabbit on these pizzas, they will be available for a limited period from August 26 to October 14.
