Jason Mofrad, 42, owner of Pizza Nova in Collingwood, has experienced an extraordinary journey from being jobless to achieving his best business year ever during the COVID-19 pandemic. Originally from Tehran, Iran, Mofrad’s story is one of resilience, determination, and a deep connection to his customers.

From Tehran to Toronto: A Journey of Survival

Mofrad grew up in Tehran, Iran’s bustling capital, during a time of revolution. Although he recalls the beauty of the city, life was challenging, and the future seemed uncertain. At 23, after completing his army eligibility, Mofrad decided to leave Iran. His brother, who had lived in Canada for 15 years, suggested he come to Canada. Despite having a good job in Iran, Mofrad agreed. However, obtaining a visa was not easy, so he came as a refugee.

With the help of his brother, Mofrad made his way from Iran to Cuba and then to Montreal, where he spent 22 days in a refugee camp. In February 2006, he was released to his family in Toronto, marking the beginning of a new chapter in his life.

A New Life in Canada

Upon arriving in Toronto, Mofrad wasted no time. Despite never having been out of the country before, he quickly adjusted to his new surroundings. His brother owned two Pizza Pizza franchises in Toronto, and Mofrad joined him at work. Initially, he disliked the job, as his passion was music—he played guitar, piano, and composed music back in Iran, where he worked in radio and television. However, over time, he grew to love the job.

Moving to Collingwood and Starting Fresh

In 2018, Mofrad found himself jobless and without money. His brother informed him about a new pizza franchise opening in Collingwood and suggested he buy it. Having previously visited the area for skiing at Blue Mountain, Mofrad was drawn to the natural beauty of Collingwood. He decided to move there, leaving behind the busy life of Tehran and Toronto.

In September 2020, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, Mofrad opened Collingwood’s Pizza Nova. Despite the challenges of starting a new business during such uncertain times, Mofrad found success. The year 2020 turned out to be his best year, with business booming and no complaints.

A Community-Oriented Approach

Over the past four years, Mofrad has navigated the complexities of running a business in Collingwood, a town with a competitive restaurant scene. However, he remains confident, relying on his extensive experience in the pizza business since 2006.

Beyond his business acumen, Mofrad is known for his community-oriented approach. He views his customers as family and goes out of his way to ensure they feel valued. If someone forgets their wallet, Mofrad trusts them and provides the food anyway, believing in the goodness of people. He recounts a day when the debit machines stopped working, and 15 customers took pizza without paying. Remarkably, every single one returned to pay and even tipped.

Balancing Work and Life

Outside of work, Mofrad is passionate about fitness, cars, and motorcycles. His day starts early, with a 5:45 a.m. wake-up call followed by a gym session. Afterward, he drives to the water to relax with a cigar before heading to work. Despite the busy schedule, Mofrad is at the pizzeria by 9 a.m., well before opening time, to prepare for the day.

A Message to the Community

Mofrad’s dedication to his customers and his genuine care for the community are what set him apart. He doesn’t see his customers as mere dollar signs but as part of his extended family. His commitment to providing quality food, made with the same care as if he were cooking for his own family, has earned him the respect and loyalty of his customers in Collingwood.
