Dago Rodriguez, owner of Jimbo’s Pizza, announced the closure of his restaurant on Saturday, Aug. 31, after struggling with recent commercial rent increases. Rodriguez has been serving the Celina community with his pizzeria since 1996.
On Thursday, Rodriguez was emotional as he prepared to close the doors for the last time. “This is a beautiful community,” he said, fighting back tears.
Rodriguez cited the recent hike in commercial rent as the main reason for the closure. The increased costs from his landlord were more than he could afford.
Celina, located about 40 miles north of Dallas, has seen rapid population growth. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city’s population surged nearly 27% from mid-2022 to mid-2023, reaching an estimated 43,717 residents. This growth has contributed to rising commercial rents.
Andres Terrazas, president of the Hispanic Business Alliance of Prosper-Celina-Gunta, noted that many small businesses in the area could face similar challenges. “It will be a challenge for Celina to maintain its small-town feel as we continue to grow,” Terrazas said.
To support struggling businesses, Terrazas is working to provide grants. Meanwhile, the community is rallying around Rodriguez. Many residents plan to visit Jimbo’s Pizza on the 31st to offer their support, and some have already come by to say goodbye.
Celina resident Ricky Leaks expressed his sadness over the situation. “It’s just sad that he has to go like this,” Leaks said.
Rodriguez expressed gratitude for the community’s support and a GoFundMe campaign set up to help him. Although he is uncertain about his next steps, he feels uplifted by the community’s backing.
“It’s a difficult situation, but it’s filled with love,” Rodriguez said.
