Pizza Hut is intensifying its efforts to achieve net zero emissions with the assistance of the national water retailer, Wave. This partnership has led to significant water and cost savings, with Pizza Hut saving over £19,000.
As part of its goal to reach net zero by 2050, Pizza Hut is focusing on enhancing its water efficiency. The UK wastes over 3 billion liters of water daily, which represents about 25% of the nation’s daily consumption. Improving water efficiency not only supports decarbonization but also addresses substantial cost issues related to water waste and leakage.
To tackle water waste, Pizza Hut has teamed up with Wave to oversee the water management of more than 130 UK locations. This collaboration is a key step in Pizza Hut’s broader strategy to meet its net zero targets.
Pizza Hut is implementing a phased approach to reach its goals, aiming to cut Scope 3 emissions by 55% by 2030 and to achieve net zero for its dine-in operations by 2040. One of Wave’s key contributions is its high consumption alerts. These notifications, triggered when water usage exceeds normal levels by 20%, help Pizza Hut manage consumption and address leaks quickly.
Malcolm Merry, Head of Property Services at Pizza Hut, commented: “Every business must take responsibility for achieving net zero, and at Pizza Hut, we are taking a proactive stance. Our recognition by the Sustainable Restaurants Association for improving our gas, electricity, and water practices is a testament to this.
“Wave has been instrumental in managing our water usage and resolving issues efficiently. Their leak detection services have been crucial, and their support continues to meet the high standards we expect.”
Over a four-month period, Wave’s high consumption alerts helped identify and fix five instances of leakage and inefficiency, leading to the £19,000 in annual savings for Pizza Hut.
Oli Shelley, Head of Water Efficiency Services at Wave, said: “Water is often overlooked in ESG strategies, yet it plays a crucial role, with businesses using 30% of the UK’s water supply. Pizza Hut’s commitment to being net zero by 2050 is commendable, and we are proud to support their water efficiency efforts.
“Addressing water inefficiencies not only helps businesses meet their sustainability goals but also offers significant cost savings. It’s essential for businesses to monitor their water usage and find ways to improve efficiency.”
