Alexandria’s Basilico Brings Authentic Italian Flavors to the Coast

In 2019, just before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Alexandria saw a notable addition to its culinary landscape. A new pizzeria opened its doors on a quiet street near Fouad St., Al Attarin. Though it initially seemed like another entry in the city’s bustling food scene, this pizzeria stood out from the start.

Alexandria, known for its Mediterranean charm, has long embraced various Mediterranean cuisines, especially Greek and Italian. Locals have grown up enjoying Italian favorites at places like Chez Gaby, Minouche, and Focacceria. Italian food is deeply embedded in the city’s culture.

The new pizzeria, Basilico, quickly set itself apart. Founded by Ahmed Hussein, a former banker who discovered his passion for Italian cuisine while living in Italy, Basilico has become a local favorite. “I realized my true passion was in the culinary world,” Hussein explains. “Leaving my banking career for Italian cuisine was a natural step for me.”

Hussein partnered with his cousin, an experienced Italian chef known as ‘El Khawaga’, to launch Basilico. The pizzeria is celebrated for its authentic, wood-fired pizzas and perfectly balanced risotto. Their menu also features a range of Italian dishes, from pasta and salads to indulgent desserts.

I visited Basilico in March 2019, just before the world changed. At that time, it felt like a hidden gem. The pizza was exceptional and unlike anything else available in the city. Today, Basilico is well-loved, with branches now in Fouad St., Kafr Abdo, and Marassi on the North Coast.

Basilico is known for its warm, family-like atmosphere. “Our commitment to creating a welcoming environment and our focus on customer satisfaction have driven our success,” says Hussein. “We are grateful for the community’s enthusiastic response.”

Looking forward, Basilico plans to expand beyond Alexandria, with goals of opening locations in Cairo and other parts of Egypt. “Our vision is to become a trusted name in Italian dining across Egypt and beyond,” Hussein adds.

Despite these plans, Alexandria remains central to Basilico’s identity. “Serving the Alexandrian community has been incredibly rewarding,” Hussein reflects. Alexandria is where Basilico’s journey began, and it continues to be at the heart of their story.
