As the new academic year begins, many students face a common issue: food theft. Research shows that 46% of students have caught someone stealing food from their fridge. This problem often leads to conflicts, with 52% of students reporting arguments over stolen snacks.
In response to this challenge, Domino’s has launched a new product designed to protect leftover pizza slices. The Slice Security safe is a lockable pizza box that aims to keep food safe from greedy roommates. A recent survey revealed that 65% of students living in shared accommodations have experienced food theft during their time at university. Commonly stolen items include milk (45%), bread (33%), and pizza (18%).
Domino’s notes that pizza is the top choice for 46% of students when ordering food. To combat theft, the Slice Security safe features a noise-activated alarm and a personalized lock keypad. This innovative gadget eliminates the need for labeling food, a practice that 60% of students admit to having done.
Melanie Howe, a spokesperson for Domino’s, stated, “There’s nothing worse than thinking you’ve got some tasty leftovers, only to find they’ve been taken. For many students, this is an all-too-common reality. We created the Slice Security safe to help protect against food theft and ensure students can enjoy their leftovers.”
Despite these challenges, many students appreciate the benefits of shared living. Over the past decade, 39% of students have enjoyed living with friends, while 35% value having their own space. However, they also worry about messy conditions (48%), loud roommates (43%), and food theft (36%).
Students find takeout appealing for several reasons, including the assurance of a delicious meal (45%), the convenience of not having to wash dishes (40%), and the chance to enjoy leftovers the next day (30%).
